On 23rd October, 1914, the 1st Royal Fusiliers battalion of 17 Brigade, 6th Division, moved into trenches at Rue Petillon, near Fleurbaiix, where they remained until 13th November. Their trenches here were shelled by the enemy on a daily basis and this was likely to have been the cause of the injuries to Cyril Barniecott who died from wounds on 17th November after having been sent back to a base hospital near Rouen.
